Neonatal Unit - 15th Jan 07 [15. Jan. 2007 - 10:23]

Today I held Brett for the first time since he was delivered, I tried to tempt him to have some feed but he just wasn't interested!

Brett is on Iv Antibiotics still, and glucose and heparin drips but in spite of this we had lots of cuddles and it felt so good to hold him.

We saw the Doctor today and we were told that the Echocardiogram that Brett had showed he has two holes in his heart, conditions called ventricular and atrial septal defects (ASD and VSD) The doctor did a great job of explaining it to us and even did a drawing of the heart to help us understand, but it was still a big shock and we were very upset.

I changed a nappy for the first time today!  (well, for Brett anyway, I've done plenty of nappies in the past!!!)  It was really strange having to cope with trying to change it while he was in the incubator, and all those tubes and wires getting in the way.  I Need more practice!

More news on Brett - Day two [14. Jan. 2007 - 11:25]

Brett's oxygen was reduced to 30% and he was started on 1ml of expressed breast milk per hour via an NG tube. (a tube that goes into his stomach via his nasal passage)

He continued to have one to one care in the ITU section of the NNU and was well looked after by fabulous nursing staff.

Brett arrives - a star is born! [13. Jan. 2006 - 11:43]

Brett Adam Jack was born by C-section today at 11.43am.  When he was first born Brett appeared to be ok and was given an agpa score of 9 and the Paed announced he was fine.  However, when Brett was in recovery with mum and dad he began to turn blue and started grunting.......

A star is born!

Because of Brett's condition in recovery he was reviewed again by the paeditrician and was found to be having difficulty breathing, a low body temperature, and a low blood sugar (less than 1 mmol).

Brett was in need of oxygen and was immediately transferred to the special care baby unit in an incubator cot.  Once in the Neonatal Unit (NNU) he was started on IV anti-biotics, a glucose drip, a heparin drip, and 35% oxygen.  This was a scarey time for us all.
